ENTEC® Helps Boost Sweet Corn Yields and Profits — Check It Out!

Sweet corn is a "treasure" crop — it serves as grain, fruit, vegetable, and feed. It’s rich in soluble polysaccharides, essential amino acids, proteins, sugars, and various vitamins, making it a favorite among consumers. With the development of hybrid varieties, sweet corn cultivation has rapidly expanded in recent years. In 2022, China’s total sweet corn planting area reached nearly 5 million mu, ranking second in the world after the U.S.

As living standards improve, sweet corn processing enterprises grow, and export trade flourishes, the demand for sweet corn is rising, and the planting area is expected to continue expanding. However, surveys show that sweet corn cultivation often involves frequent and excessive fertilization, resulting in low nutrient use efficiency, increased costs, reduced profitability, and heightened environmental risks.

ENTEC® Compound Fertilizer: Efficient and High-Yielding

ENTEC® compound fertilizer features hard granules, a synergistic mix of nitrate and ammonium nitrogen, and added secondary and micronutrients. In trials with summer corn in Hebei and spring corn in Jilin, ENTEC® reduced nitrogen use by 10–20% compared to traditional fertilization while increasing nitrogen use efficiency up to 50% and yield by 9%!

Drawing on these successful experiences, this trial explores how ENTEC® can optimize sweet corn fertilization to save inputs and increase yields.

Trial Details

  • Location: Tuanjie Village, Mangshi, Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province
  • Farmer: Mr. Ai
  • Crop: Sweet corn variety "Kupula"
  • Previous crop: Rice
  • Transplant date: September 20, 2023
  • Harvest date: January 10, 2024
  • Planting density: 3,500 plants/mu (25 cm between plants, 60 cm between rows)

Fertilization Plans

Notes:

  1. The farmer applied 80 kg/mu of commercial organic fertilizer (5-5-5), costing ¥200/mu, before transplanting. The ENTEC® plan did not include this.
  2. The farmer applied 5 kg/mu of compound fertilizer and urea (¥11) 10 days after transplanting to promote seedling growth.
  3. Based on literature, producing 1 ton of sweet corn requires 10 kg nitrogen, 3 kg phosphate (P₂O₅), and 12 kg potassium (K₂O). For a target yield of 1.5 tons/mu, the ENTEC® plan provides sufficient nutrients.

Economic Benefit Analysis

Notes:

  1. Net benefit includes increased output value and reduced costs.
  2. Market price: Farmer practice corn sold at ¥2.5/kg; ENTEC® corn, with fuller kernels and fewer tip blanks, sold at ¥2.6/kg.
  3. ENTEC® required two fewer fertilizations, saving ¥100/mu in labor.

Field Performance

  • Transplanting: Good root development
  • Seedling stage: Stronger, healthier seedlings
  • Growth: Vigorous and uniform
  • Ears: Fuller, fewer tip blanks

ENTEC® Fertilizer Mechanism

The ENTEC® advantage lies in significantly increasing single-ear weight while using less fertilizer. Compared to traditional practice, ENTEC® improved fertilizer use efficiency and reduced application frequency. Studies confirm that better fertilization enhances agronomic traits such as:

  • Longer and thicker ears
  • Taller plants and higher ear height
  • Improved ear characteristics
  • Fewer tip blanks
  • Higher ear yield

ENTEC® performed exceptionally well in all these aspects, laying a solid foundation for high yield.

Conventional sweet corn fertilization relies heavily on urea or urea-based fertilizers, which quickly hydrolyze into ammonia after soil application, leading to nitrogen loss via volatilization. ENTEC® contains a nitrification inhibitor that keeps nitrogen in ammonium form, reducing leaching through cation exchange with soil colloids.
