A Century of Legacy – Horse and Lion® Compound Fertilizer

Brand & Heritage

The Horse and Lion® (狮马牌®) trademark shares deep historical roots with BASF, the world’s largest chemical company. Originating in 1873, the logo combines the horse from Stuttgart and the lion from Bavaria, symbolizing the union of strength and wisdom.

Evolution of the Horse and Lion Logo

In 1913, BASF established the world’s first commercial ammonia synthesis plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, laying a vital foundation for modern agriculture. After extensive research and testing, BASF launched Nitrophoska® Horse and Lion®, the world’s first compound fertilizer in 1926. Its scientifically balanced NPK formula quickly gained global popularity, particularly in Asia. Since the 1950s, Nitrophoska® Horse and Lion® has become a symbol of high-quality fertilizers, earning the long-term trust of farmers worldwide.

In 2012, the EuroChem Group acquired the Antwerp fertilizer plant, along with full ownership of the Horse and Lion® brand, continuing its century-old legacy of technology and quality to support global agriculture.

Horse and Lion® compound fertilizers offer balanced nutrition and exceptional adaptability, serving as a powerful tool to help farmers increase both yield and income. Early Market Entry in China

In early 20th-century China, Horse and Lion® entered the market as "Feitianfen"❶. In 1928, renowned agronomist Xu Xuan partnered with Deutsche Stickstoff Handelsgesellschaft (Krauch & Company)❷ to establish an agricultural research station in Zhenru, Shanghai, conducting fertilizer efficiency comparison trials. These efforts significantly promoted the use of Horse and Lion® Feitianfen in China. Since then, the brand has become a symbol of high-quality NPK compound fertilizers.
