Application Effect of Entec® on Green Onion (Scallion) Cultivation

Zhangpu Green Onion, a geographical indication agricultural product from Zhangpu County in Fujian Province, has become a representative specialty vegetable in southeastern China. Thanks to its unique natural environment and long cultivation history, Zhangpu is now one of the leading green onion production regions in China.

According to reports, Zhangpu County has over 50,000 mu (approx. 3,300 hectares) of green onion cultivation, with an annual output exceeding 150,000 tons. Exports account for about 45% of the national total, and Chihu Town, the core production area, alone has around 30,000 mu under cultivation. Nutritionally, Zhangpu green onions are rich in allicin, vitamin C, and various minerals, offering both culinary and health benefits. Their active compounds aid digestion and boost immunity, making them important in both traditional cuisine and modern health-conscious diets.

Challenges in Local Cultivation

Field research in Zhangpu reveals that most farmland consists of coastal sandy loam soils, which have poor nutrient retention and low organic matter content. Traditional fertilization methods used by local farmers are often inefficient, leading to slow plant growth, lower yields and quality, and poor fertilizer use efficiency.

This trial was conducted in Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, to assess the effectiveness of Entec® compound fertilizer in green onion cultivation, with the goal of providing practical guidance to improve local production.

Experimental Design

  1. Trial Setup
The experiment used an intercropping model with green onions and carrots. Carrots were transplanted on September 20, 2024, and harvested on January 10, 2025. Green onions were transplanted on October 9, 2024, and harvested on April 17, 2025, with a planting density of 20,000 plants per mu.
    Two treatments were established:
  • Entec® demonstration plot
  • Traditional fertilization plot (control)

(See original chart; units: kg/mu)

  1. Measurement Parameters
At harvest, 22 green onion plants from each treatment were sampled. The following traits were measured:
  • Total onion length
  • White shaft length
  • Pseudostem thickness
  • Fresh weight per plant
  • Leaf-removed weight per plant
These values were used to calculate per-mu yield.

Field Performance Results

Key quality indicators for green onions include:

  • Total length,
  • White shaft length, and
  • Pseudostem thickness.
These directly influence market value and economic return.

Observations:

  • Onions in the Entec® plot had darker green leaves, longer and thicker white shafts, and stronger, more upright stalks.
  • Root systems were also visibly more developed.

Measured Improvements (Entec® vs. Control):

  • Onion length: +3.58 cm
  • White shaft length: +3.18 cm
  • Pseudostem thickness: +0.11 cm
  • Fresh weight per plant: +42.05 g
  • Leaf-removed weight per plant: +52.28 g

(Refer to charts for detailed data. Note: scale unit is jin [1 jin ≈ 0.5 kg].)

Results & Analysis

  • Fertilizer cost increased slightly by ¥29 per mu with the Entec® plan.
  • However, yield rose to 6,591 kg per mu, which is 1,046 kg more than the control.
  • At an average purchase price of ¥0.8/kg, this results in an income increase of ¥837 per mu.

Conclusion

The Entec® compound fertilizer significantly improves the growth, yield, and economic benefits of green onion farming. With only a slight increase in input costs, it delivers better plant development and a substantial boost in income per mu.

If you're a green onion grower, trying Entec® might be a worthwhile step toward higher profitability!
